Another artificial wrackage around Nilaveli is so called “Bus station” where you can find many sunken busses and other artificial reef structures at the depth of 20 meters.

Mortar Rock/Angel Rock

A favourite among snorkelers and divers alike, Mortar Rock (also called Angel Rock) is home to some of the best corals in Nilaveli. A long stretch of untouched and thriving corals are bound to take your breath away at a depth as shallow as 8m. Snorkelers are often greeted by turtles and divers can see a range of reef fish. The dive site is best suited for beginners as well as experienced divers who would like to get a glimpse of the coral gardens that lie beneath.

Sithanane Pare

With a maximum depth of 18m, Seethanane Pare is a pinnacle consisting of big boulders and soft corals. Anemonefish and Moray eels can be found in abundance on this dive site along with a garden of Christmas Tree Worms which add beautiful colours to an already picturesque dive site. Top 10 Myths about Scuba Diving

Like most adventure sports, scuba diving has its own share of myths and misunderstandings with shark attacks topping the list. Scuba diving is one of the most relaxed adventure sports and is almost meditative, taking you into a state of suspended gravity. Compared to most other adventure sports, diving is also very safe and affordable. If you are someone who loves water and wish to explore the wonders it holds beneath, scuba diving is just the activity for you!

In this article, we bust a few myths about scuba diving to rectify the misconceptions around the activity and hoping that more people will embrace the activity and see the wonders of the ocean!

Scuba Diving Takes a Long Time to Learn and is Difficult

You can get certified in just 4 days! Yes, the PADI Open Water Diver Course, which is the first level in recreational diving, only takes 4 days to complete. It involves a bit of theory, confined water training and 4 open water dives. The Open Water Diver certification is valid for a lifetime and allows you to dive anywhere around the world! The course is your gateway to the underwater world and if you are comfortable in water then it’s rather easy to get through. Once certified as an Open Water Diver, you are eligible to take up the Advanced Open Water Course, which takes 2-3 days to complete. This certifies you to dive to a maximum depth of 30m, making a majority of the world’s dive sites accessible to you. In just a matter of one week, you can have both your certifications completed! Scuba Diving is Expensive

Compared to most other adventure sports, scuba diving is very affordable. Your only real investment is in the certificate course after which you are eligible for fun dives which are extremely affordable and accessible. What’s even better? “Oxygen Tanks”

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about scuba diving is that the tanks contain oxygen. The scuba tanks are actually filled with air, the exact composition of air you are breathing as you read this article, 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen. We never breathe 100% oxygen unless it is an emergency or during dive procedures in specialised technical diving.

Shark Attacks!

On my fifth dive, I was surrounded by sharks and the last thing on my mind was being attacked by them. Hollywood and popular culture have thoroughly villainised sharks and moulded public perception to believe that sharks are these aggressive creatures when in fact they are just out and about living their life in the ocean. They are fairly decent beings who will not mind your presence unless you go out of your way to make your presence felt or threaten their existence. Bottomline, us divers are thrilled to see sharks on a dive and trust us, you will love seeing them too!

You have to be an Excellent Swimmer for Scuba Diving

Absolutely not! While you have to be comfortable in water and have basic swimming skills to get through the Open Water Course, you don’t have to be an olympic swimmer to be a scuba diver! The PADI Open Water Course requires you to swim 200m or snorkel for 300m along with treading water for 10 minutes as part of the performance requirements. If you have absolutely no swimming or in water skills, you can still try scuba diving by signing up for the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program which will introduce you to the underwater world. Please note that this is not a certification course.

You Need Expensive Gear and Equipment for Scuba Diving

Not really. Almost all dive schools and centres around the world offer rental equipment included in their charges and even with that the activity remains affordable. You need not invest in any gear if you do not wish to do so and can rent out everything at the dive centre. However, if you plan on diving more frequently, it is always advisable to invest in your own mask, fins and dive computer to ensure safety and comfort.

Scuba Diving is Limited by Age

In my time working as a dive professional, I have seen 70 year olds go diving and thoroughly enjoy their experience. If you are fit and do not have any major medical conditions, scuba diving remains accessible to you. However, for safety reasons, as an industry we mandate medical forms for everyone and physician’s clearances where required, particularly for people over the age of 45. Diving is Only Possible on Exotic Islands

Diving is more accessible today than ever. There are diving schools and centres around the world and one can even dive in lakes, quarries, ponds and even ice! Social media has made everyone believe that you need to travel to a tropical location for scuba diving but wherever you are, you might find a diving centre located very close to you!

Scuba Diving is Dangerous

Anything can be dangerous if you are reckless. While scuba diving comes with its own set of risks, it is by no measure a dangerous sport. There are a number of safety procedures and protocols in place to ensure that we surface from our dives safely without compromising our health.

At Divinguru our highest priority is safety of our divers. Furthermore we have as the only diving school in Sri Lanka liability insurance for all water sports activities we offer.

All the Life is in the Depths

False! Realistically speaking, most of the stunning corals and reef fish can be found at shallower depths. Even schooling fish, rays and turtles are generally all in shallower waters. Life is more sparse as you go deeper so even as an Open Water Diver you can see a lot more than you think you can!

You’ll come across many dive companies around Sri Lanka and every dive operator will tell you to go diving with them. Here are some tips you should check before going diving and WHY to choose Divinguru for your scuba holidays in Sri Lanka.

There is many dive centres around Sri Lanka offering different quality of services. Do your own research, read reviews and ask questions! Are you looking for professionalism, safety, small group size, lowest prices or extra attention? Make an informed choice about which dive store you use, not just the first one you see on the beach.

Read Reviews

Reputation is important when it comes to choosing the right dive centre. Read online reviews and ask other travelers. It’s always good to get first-hand information. Listen to divers feedback about their diving experience, safety, standards and rented equipment. Always try and find reviews of the equipment if you are going to be hiring gear and about the instructors if you are doing a course. If you want to double check that you are in safe hands, you can also use PADI’s Dive Shop Locator to check a shop’s credentials.

Price

Price should never be a deciding factor when choosing a scuba diving centre. Just because a store is offering low prices it doesn’t mean that they are the best. You always get what you pay for and there is a reason why they are cheaper than the others. (If they are super cheap compared to the competitors, ask yourself why.) Have this in your considerations when choosing your dive center. Never forget to put your personal safety above the desire to save money.

There is no problem to travel on budget, it’s worth to ask for discounts! You can often get a deal for multi-day dive package, early bird discount or even for having your own equipment.

Questions To Ask

You need to know what to look for when choosing a dive center. When you have chosen a store don’t be afraid asking the dive center staff some questions. They are there to help you make the right choices and they want you to feel safe. If you do come across staff that’s unwilling to give you answers, you can walk away anytime. Think about what you need to make you feel safe and ask questions relating to it.

1. Check for a dive agency affiliation (PADI, SSI, etc.)

2. Is the dive centre PADI registered and renewed?

3. Ask the Divemaster (“guides”) and Instructors for their certification cards.

4. Do the dive centre and Instructors have an insurance.

5. Do foreign Instructors have a valid work permit for Sri Lanka?

6. How many Divemasters and Instructors do they have, where are they from and what languages they speak?

7. Do they check your qualification cards and medical form?

8. Are there any additional costs you should be aware of.

9. Does the equipment look well maintained on close inspection?

10. Ask how often they service their rental equipment.

11. Ask whether you can see the latest test certificates (e.g. are the tanks pressure tested?)

Make Your Own Inspection

You do not have to be a professional when it comes to knowing how to evaluate a dive center. You need to trust your eyes and your ears and listen to your instincts. If you were asked to step into a boat that looked unsafe you wouldn’t do it. If equipment looks unsafe you shouldn’t use it. Each destination has plenty of dive shops for you to go into and look around.

We are DIVINGURU – SRI LANKA, authorized PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Resorts at the south coast in Unawatuna, 2 km from Galle and at the north east coast in Nilaveli, 10km north from Trincomalee town.

All our Diving Centres are on our own properties and credited as PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Dive Resorts. Our first dive centre in Unawatuna is PADI certified since 2005 and our dive resort in Nilaveli since 2010. It costs a certain amount of money to run a professional Dive Centre. If we start cutting corners on price, then we would also be forced to cut corners on safety and services provided.

Our goal is to create safe place for divers to experience the underwater world. We have successfully created a well know brand which people recognize as a safe and professional diving centre with high standards and good reputation among divers in Sri Lankan diving industry.

Divinguru Sri Lanka is approved by the Board of Investment and the Tourist Development Authority of Sri Lanka.

Insurance

While scuba diving insurance is not mandatory in Sri Lanka, everyone wants to feel safe (not only) while diving. Our Diving Centres are fully PADI Group PRRA Combined Liability Insured for Public Liability, Product Liability and Professional Liability. Divinguru Sri Lanka, PADI 5 STAR IDC DIVE RESORTS are fully insured for Diving for Beginners, Fun Dives, PADI Courses, Snorkelling Trips, Whale & Dolphin Watching and other related Water Sport Activities.

Additionally all our PADI Dive Instructors and PADI Divemasters have also their own PADI Professional Dive Insurance.

We are Insured for Public Liability with USD 12 Million each claim, Product Liability with USD 12 Million each claim, for Professional Liability USD 3 Million each claim, Criminal Defense Costs USD 185 Thousand each claim and Crisis/Media Management each USD 92 Thousand each claim. Diving with US!

We are diving in small groups with max. 5 divers plus one PADI Divemaster or PADI Dive Instructor. Our diving courses and dive trips are run in small groups to ensure a personal service. We evaluate the dive conditions every morning and consider the best place to dive according to the visibility, experience of whole group and marine life. We are honest regarding the ocean conditions. When the weather and sea conditions are not good, we don’t dive.

Divers safety is our main priority! Our dive briefings cover all safety and standard procedures. In addition, our diving base has a stationary Oxygen Supply and portable DAN System that are available on diving boats. All our boat captains, diving guides and Dive Instructors are all trained in first aid assistance and have an EFR certificates.

We own around 30 full sets of well maintained diving equipment of all sizes, mostly SCUBA PRO. Our Regulators and BCDs are permanently or at least every six months serviced.

All our Scuba Diving Tanks are visually inspected annually and the mandatory professional pressure test is done through Ceylon Oxygen after every 4 – 5 years.

All our seven small diving boat are running with environmental friendly YAMAHA 4 Stroke 40 HP Boat Engines.

We are using first class BAUER compressors (made by BAUER, Germany) to fill speedy our 12 L Aluminum Tanks with DIN or INT connectors. We are changing our ORIGINAL Oil and Air filters regularly as well as the ORIGINAL BAUER filter cartridges to ensure outstanding purification of breathing air. For children we also provide 8 L Aluminum Diving Tanks

We provide for Enriched Air NITROX for certified EANx divers FREE OF CHARGE on request if suitable to diving site!

There is dozens of diving schools in Sri Lanka but how do you make sure that you get the best possible training and experience? Here is a simple list of questions to ask before choosing a diving centre for training:

1. Is the dive centre PADI registered and renewed?

2. Do the dive centre and Instructors have an Insurance?

3. How many Instructor do they have, where are they from and what languages they speak?

4. How many participants is in one course, Student to Instructor ratio.

5. Are there any additional costs I should be aware of?

6. How many days the PADI OWD Course takes?

How to get the best training?

The duration of the entry level scuba course is crucial. Don’t rush your PADI OWD course! You learn the most over time. The minimum duration of the PADI Open Water Diver Course is 3-4 days. Do other dive centres offer course just in 2 days? Check the whole schedule out and make your opinion.

Schedule of the PADI Open Water Diver Course

Day 1: registration and theory

Every diver needs to fill Diver Registration Form which includes PADI Safe Diving Practices and Liability Release forms. Very important is also the Diver Medical Questionnaire to see if you are ready to go diving. Is any dive centre not offering these? Careful with that.. scuba diving requires good physical and mental health. If you successfully complete your “first exam”,.. I mean this diver registration form then you can start with the theoretical part of the course. The theory takes whole day and it’s important to understand all theoretical fundamentals of scuba diving. Don’t worry! Our instructor is there for you to show you real life example, equipment and makes it fun! The theory is divided into 5 chapters.. you’ll watch videos, complete knowledge reviews, quizzes and final exam.

Your Instructor guides you through the theoretical development and answers all your questions.

Day 2: confined dives in swimming pool

Now you are ready to jump in the water! Our new diving centre in Nilaveli has a special diving pool with deep part where you practice and improve your skills as a diver. Again, there is 5 confined dives to complete and depending how comfortable you are in the water, it might take half up to whole day. Definitely you can get ready for this part before starting your course! Get used to breathing through your mouth and swim with your eyes open in the water. That helps a lot!

To become a qualified scuba diver you need to be able to swim! At least you have to be able to maintain yourself comfortable at the surface for ten minutes in water too deep in which to stand.

You also have to do a 200 m swim (any style) or 300 m snorkel swim (with mask, snorkel and fins) without a time limit.

Day 3 & 4: diving in the open water

Now you are ready to go diving into the ocean! Each dive (total 4) has been designed to give divers the opportunity to practice and hone their diving skills while increasing confidence and comfort in the water. Each day you go diving from one of our boats, for the first two dives of the PADI Open Water Course the maximum depth is 12m. The maximum depth for final two dives of the OWD Course is 18m. We start everyday at 8:30am and finish diving at around 1pm. After you return to the diving school your Instructor helps you to complete your logbook entries and identify different species of marine life you have witnessed on your dives. Diving helps create a bond between people, all coming from different parts of the world, but all sharing the same love for the ocean, and we provide the platform just for that. Develop your skills as a diver in real diving environment and be surrounded by tropical fish! Did you know that the best corals in Sri Lanka you find on the east coast? Check out our dive sites.

New PADI Open Water Divers. After the course you are allowed to dive up to 18m with your buddy.

Certification & Materials

Don’t forget about your materials and certification! Remember that you need to be assigned with the physical or digital PADI Open Water Diver Manual in the end of the course. Make sure the dive centre certifies you!

You’ll receive an email from PADI with your temporary e-card and later on you can check your e-card in the PADI App where you have everything under “one roof” (logbook, materials and e-card).

Finally you are qualified diver ready to explore the underwater world! As the certified PADI Open Water Diver you’re able to dive just with your buddy, who is also a certified PADI Open Water diver or above up to 18m.

PADI eLearning

If you are short on time, complete the PADI Open Water Diver eLearning which shortens the total course duration. Like this the course takes only 3 days and you complete the theoretical part in advance at home. The advantage is that you can study the theory at your own pace and safe one day on your holidays in paradise! The price for the eLearning materials depends on your home country and you can check it out on PADI website.

The Best Time to Scuba Dive in Sri Lanka

Do you wonder what is the best time to scuba dive in Sri Lanka? Then you found the right place. Divinguru is operating whole year round and we offer all scuba diving activities, PADI Courses, Snorkeling and Whale & Dolphin Watching. From October until April we are open at our diving centre Divinguru Unawatuna on the south coast of Sri Lanka. From March until October you find us at Divinguru Nilaveli, located 10km north from Trincomalee town on the east coast. So from 15th March until 10th April you can scuba dive on the best spots on both coasts of Sri Lanka. But that doesn’t mean you can scuba dive in Sri Lanka only one month.

We are open whole year round at our different locations and diving according the monsoon season. Each coast has something different to offer so let’s have a look when is the best time to scuba dive in Sri Lanka.

When is Sri Lanka diving season?

The diving season in Sri Lanka is whole year round at different locations. We can divide diving in Sri Lanka into two seasons. According to to monsoon season Divinguru is operating half year in Unawatuna on the south coast and second half of the year in Nilaveli and Trincomalee in the north-east of Sri Lanka.

Divinguru Unawatuna is open every year from 15th October until 10th April, in this 6 months period you can enjoy the best diving conditions in Sri Lanka. From mid of April onwards diving on the south coast is influenced by the south west monsoon. Due to these conditions Divinguru centre in Unawatuna is closed. No worries, we are moving to the untouched north-east coast!

However bathing and swimming is possible during the whole year due to the reefs protecting Unawatuna Beach and the Mihiripenna/Dalawella Beach from high waves.

Divinguru Nilaveli is operating every year from 15th March to 30th October just 10km from Trincomalee town. In this time period you can find the best diving on the nort-east coast with calm sea and good underwater visibility. Our diving centre is located very near to the famous Pigeon Island Marine National Park in Nilaveli where you can snorkel with sharks and turtles. From mid November onwards the diving on the east coast is influenced by the north east monsoon. The sea becomes rough, heavy rain influences the dive conditions and our diving centres in the east are closed. Then Divinguru moves to the south where the south west monsoon ends at around the mid of October and the dive season starts.

During the off-season the sea becomes rough and heavy rain influences the dive conditions. Usually monsoons carry more humid air from the Indian Ocean. Sometimes there are strong winds and rains but on average never longer than an hour or two.

The Pigeon Island is located a few minutes by boat transfer from Divinguru Nilaveli.

Weather & Diving conditions in Sri Lanka

Daily sunshine is even during the monsoon period in average 8 hours a day. Day temperatures are around 29 to 32 Degrees Celsius and night temperatures 26 to 30 Degrees Celsius. Water temperature is the whole year between 27 and 30 Celsius. Underwater visibility can change quite quickly, on average we have 10 meters, if lucky 15 meters maximum.

What you can expect while diving in Sri Lanka?

Both coasts has something different to offer. On the south coasts you can expect deep diving and wreck diving and on the east coast shallow diving with beautiful corals. If you are looking to spot a big fish, then definitely visit the famous Pigeon Island Marine National Park on the east coast of Sri Lanka where you can snorkel with black tip reef sharks and sea turtles. If you get lucky on the south coast you can spot whale sharks or manta rays during months of January until April.
