Dear Nigel, Thank you for your comment. Definitely you can travel to Sri Lanka in October and have nice weather for sightseeing. The south coast can be still influenced by the south-west monsoon but you will find also sunny days. For scuba diving we highly recommend east coast of Sri Lanka in the month of October. The scuba diving conditions are perfect around Nilaveli, flat ocean and visibility between 10-15 meters. You can enjoy soft and hard corals and great variety of marine life.

I am a keen diver an usually travel to Thailand Bali & Egypt , i thought i would try Sri Lanka and so i booked a flight from England in October 2025 as i read the weather would be good ,doing more research I have learned this month is not good for diving .
Before i cancel or rearrange my flight can you give me more advice please which would be much appreciated.

The heavy rainfall in June, July and August, as you mention, is on the south coast of Sri Lanka. The south coast is influenced by the south west monsoon from mid of April until end of October therefore it is not good idea to scuba dive or snorkel in south due to bad sea conditions (high waves, current, low underwater visibility). That’s why our diving centre in south is closed and we are operating from the east coast of Sri Lanka. Pigeon Island is located on the north east coast of Sri Lanka so it is not affected by rain at this part of the year. The climate is dry on the east coast and it is a good idea to wear a sun protection at any time of your visit from March until October 😉

Thank you for your comment. I definitely agree that the best time to visit Pigeon Island is from May until September. However the north-east monsoon ends already in February so I would not hesitate to scuba dive or snorkel on the Pigeon Island in March or April already. The high peak of the season is during European summer holidays in June, July & August when the Pigeon Island can get overcrowded.

During these months, the weather is nice and warm. However, the island gets very hot during summer due to its location on the equator. The island also receives heavy rainfall in June, July and August. The best months to visit Pigeon Island are May, June and September. In these months, the weather is cooler than in March and April. This makes it easier for you to enjoy your trip without getting burnt by the sun.
