Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to become PADI certified with us.

Choosing the right PADI course is the first step in the process. If you’re new to scuba diving, it is ideal to start with the PADI Open Water Diver course. This certification is globally recognized and allows you to dive up to 18 meters (60 feet) anywhere in the world and is valid life long. This is often confused with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program and the PADI Scuba Diver course. The PADI Discover Scuba Diving program is a one time experience introducing you to the underwater world under complete supervision of an instructor. This is not a certificate course and participating in it will not make you a certified scuba diver. The PADI Scuba Diver course certifies you to dive to a maximum depth of 12 meters (39 feet), but always with a dive professional. For divers who already have the Open Water certification, we also offer the Advanced Open Water Diver course which is the next step. Going ahead you can also choose from the Rescue Diver course or even go pro and do the Divemaster course. There is also plenty of Specialty Courses for those who want to specialize in certain types of diving. You can choose from PADI Specialties including Deep Diver, Enriched Air Diver, Wreck Diver, Underwater Photographer or Night Diver.

Once you choose your course, there is some theoretical aspect of the course that you are required to complete. You can either complete the theory on PADI’s eLearning platform or study in a classroom. The theory gives you a good idea of what is to come and what you can expect during the practical aspects of your course.

You start with some confined water training in the swimming pool where you get the opportunity to learn and practice essential diving skills and safe practices before heading out into the ocean. This part of the training also gives you a thorough understanding of how to use your gear. Confined water training takes anywhere from 4-8 hours depending on the class size and your comfort level. Please note that actual time taken could also be longer than this depending on the situation.

Now that you have completed your theory and confined water training, you are ready for your ocean dives! The PADI Open Water course requires you to complete four dives in open water before you can be certified. These dives are typically done over two days with two dives on each day. You will finally be experiencing the magic of the underwater world with schools of fish, stingrays and turtles dropping by to say hello to say as you glide along the reefs of Sri Lanka. Your first three dives involve performing some of the skills you learnt during the confined water training. On dive number 4, you will see that you have evolved over the last few days and are able to dive with ease! Rest assured, you will be yearning to go back underwater after these dives! Please note that you need to complete a 10 minute float and a 200m swim test (or 300m snorkelling test) to get certified!

Once you have completed all your training and open water dives, you will be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver! You will receive a digital card from PADI as proof of certification. This card is valid everywhere around the world and will allow you to dive to a maximum depth of 18m.

Dolphins are a regular spectacle and will greet you as you set out at dawn in search of the majestic mammals who have ruled the oceans since prehistoric times. You have chance to spot spinner dolphins and/or bottlenose dolphins.

If you are travelling on the south coast, Mirissa is one of the best spots for whale watching with high chance of spotting whales (fin whales, sei whales, sperm whales, pilot whales), 50/50 chance of spotting blue whales, the biggest animals on earth. One of the biggest misconceptions people have about scuba diving is that the tanks contain oxygen. The scuba tanks are actually filled with air, the exact composition of air you are breathing as you read this article, 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen. We never breathe 100% oxygen unless it is an emergency or during dive procedures in specialised technical diving.

On my fifth dive, I was surrounded by sharks and the last thing on my mind was being attacked by them. Hollywood and popular culture have thoroughly villainised sharks and moulded public perception to believe that sharks are these aggressive creatures when in fact they are just out and about living their life in the ocean. They are fairly decent beings who will not mind your presence unless you go out of your way to make your presence felt or threaten their existence. Bottomline, us divers are thrilled to see sharks on a dive and trust us, you will love seeing them too!

Absolutely not! While you have to be comfortable in water and have basic swimming skills to get through the Open Water Course, you don’t have to be an olympic swimmer to be a scuba diver! The PADI Open Water Course requires you to swim 200m or snorkel for 300m along with treading water for 10 minutes as part of the performance requirements. If you have absolutely no swimming or in water skills, you can still try scuba diving by signing up for the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program which will introduce you to the underwater world. Please note that this is not a certification course.

Not really. Almost all dive schools and centres around the world offer rental equipment included in their charges and even with that the activity remains affordable. You need not invest in any gear if you do not wish to do so and can rent out everything at the dive centre. However, if you plan on diving more frequently, it is always advisable to invest in your own mask, fins and dive computer to ensure safety and comfort.

In my time working as a dive professional, I have seen 70 year olds go diving and thoroughly enjoy their experience. If you are fit and do not have any major medical conditions, scuba diving remains accessible to you. Diving is more accessible today than ever. There are diving schools and centres around the world and one can even dive in lakes, quarries, ponds and even ice! Social media has made everyone believe that you need to travel to a tropical location for scuba diving but wherever you are, you might find a diving centre located very close to you!

Anything can be dangerous if you are reckless. While scuba diving comes with its own set of risks, it is by no measure a dangerous sport. There are a number of safety procedures and protocols in place to ensure that we surface from our dives safely without compromising our health.

False! Realistically speaking, most of the stunning corals and reef fish can be found at shallower depths. Even schooling fish, rays and turtles are generally all in shallower waters. Life is more sparse as you go deeper so even as an Open Water Diver you can see a lot more than you think you can!

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver or even looking at technical diving, scuba diving in Sri Lanka has something to offer for everyone! Being an island nation, the coastline of the country is vast with myriad diving spots offering different underwater landscapes and marine life. Below is a list of all the prominent dive destinations in the country with quick insight into what they offer.

Located on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka, Nilaveli is an untouched paradise. With a range of dive sites off the coast, Nilaveli is home to stunning coral reefs and rock structures where marine life thrives. Dive sites range from a depth of 6m to 35m, making it perfect for beginners and advanced level divers. The famous Pigeon Island, which is home to black tip reef sharks and sea turtles is also located close to Nilaveli. Our scuba diving school Divinguru is located just opposite the famous Pigeon Island. The northeast coast of Sri Lanka is also frequented by whales and dolphins so keep your fingers crossed! (Please note that it is illegal to do any in water activities with whales in Sri Lanka.)

The best time for diving in Nilaveli is from March to October. Visibility ranges from 5m to 20m and the conditions are typically easy. This makes it a top spot for doing your beginner level scuba diving courses in Sri Lanka. Our dive centre Divinguru Nilaveli offers the perfect opportunity to get certified or even just for some fun dives! Nilaveli is located 248 kms away from the main international airport in Colombo and can be reached by public bus or private taxis. One can also take a train to Trincomalee which is 13 kms away from Nilaveli. 

A stone’s throw away from Galle, Unawatuna has grown as a popular tourist spot and a diving destination over the years! Directly on the Unawatuna Beach you can also find our diving centre Divinguru Unawatuna. Different from your typical dives over coral reefs, the dive sites in Unawatuna offer marvellous rock structures and formations with swim throughs and canyons. The age-old wrecks of S.S. Rangoon and S.S. Orestes are also accessible from here, making it an exciting spot for diving enthusiasts. Dive sites range from a depth of 5m to 32m and are home to schooling fish, turtles, octopuses, nudibranchs and even a variety of wrasses. Time to time we get lucky to spot dolphins or whale sharks around our dive sites in Unawatuna.

The best time for diving in Unawatuna is from November to March with visibility ranging 5m to 15m. Unawatuna is located 153 kms from the main international airport in Colombo and can be reached by public bus or private taxis. One can also take a train from Colombo Fort Station to Galle which is 6 kms away from Unawatuna.

Home to HMS Hermes, the world’s first ship which was designed to be an aircraft carrier, Batticaloa is a technical divers paradise. Hermes lies in the depths, off the coast of Batticaloa, in all its might. Located between 44-55 metres, Hermes is a monstrous ship with so much to see and explore. Hermes sank off the coast of Sri Lanka after being bombed by the Japanese during World War II. It has developed an ecosystem of its own over the years and numerous schools of fish have made it their home. Given its depth, this shipwreck is only accessible to technical divers. Conditions here can also be challenging.

Batticaloa also offers wrecks at shallower depths, S.S.Brennus and S.S.John Jackson, both of which have so much to offer with John Jackson being the largest steam shipwreck off the coast of Sri Lanka.

The best time to dive in Batticaloa is from March to October. Batticaloa is located 292 kms away from the main international airport and can be reached by public bus or taxis.

Located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa is a diving hotspot known for its shipwrecks, rocky and hard coral reefs. These reefs are home to a myriad species of reef fish and rays which are bound to make your dives exciting. Diving in Hikkaduwa is suitable for beginners and offers some nice shallow dives for those who want to start their scuba diving journey.

The best time to dive in Hikkaduwa is from November to March. Hikkaduwa is located 143 kms away from the main international airport and can be reached by public bus or private taxi. One can also catch a train from Colombo Fort Station to Hikkaduwa.

Colombo is home to an array of wrecks, both at depth and in the shallows for divers of various certification levels. Over the years, it has earned its reputation for wreck diving in the diving community and now divers across the world come here to dive at the wrecks. Apart from wrecks, Colombo is also home to stunning corals. Gorgonian Gardens is a famous dive site located off the coast of Colombo at 35m. The dive site is filled with large Gorgonian fans and one can spot a number of different species of fish here. If you are diving in Sri Lanka, do not miss out on the dive sites in Colombo for they might be some of the most exciting dives you have ever been on!

The best time for diving in Colombo is from November to April.
